The sanctuaries of the male souls

Synopsis

We learn why it is possible that 'a wicked man that it is good with him, and a just man that it is bad with him.' Through hardship and punishment the soul is made to illuminate the body; when its light is lit from the soul, the body praises God. It is impossible for the wicked ones to illuminate however much they are hit because they are incapable of illumination. The emissary tells Rabbi Shimon that at night the righteous spirits enter the supernal Yeshivah and are taught secret matters; when they ascend they leave their robes of this world, and when they descend they again dress up in those robes.

206. On these days, new matters were repeated to the head of the Yeshivah about ancient secrets; 'a righteous man thrives,' and 'a righteous man suffers.' All the souls ascend into the weighing scale of that tree, WHICH IS MALCHUT, prior to their descent into this world and according to the weight they get in this world. The head of the Yeshivah came down and divulged what he heard above. He revealed one point and nothing else. If wood doesn't kindle, it is hit and struck and so it gives off light. If the light of the soul does not come up in the body, the body is beaten until the light of the soul will rise, and unite together THE BODY WITH THE SOUL to give off light.

206. יוֹמָא דָּא אַהְדְּרָן מִלִּין חַדְתִּין קַמֵּי רַב מְתִיבְתָּא, עַל רָזִין עַתִּיקִין, צַדִּיק וְטוֹב לוֹ, צַדִּיק וָרָע לוֹ. דְּכֻלְּהוּ סַלְּקִין גּוֹ מַתְקְלָא דְּאִילָנָא, עַד לָא יֵיתוּן לְעָלְמָא, וּכְפוּם טַקְלָא דְּמַתְקְלָא, הָכִי אִית לוֹן בְּהַאי עָלְמָא. רַב מְתִיבְתָּא, נָחִית וְגַלֵּי מִמָּה דְּשָׁמַע לְעֵילָּא, מִלָּה חֲדָא גַּלֵּי וְלָא יַתִּיר. אָעָא דְּלָא סָלִיק נְהוֹרֵיהּ, יְבָטְשׁוּן בֵּיהּ וְאַנְהִיר. גּוּפָא דְּלָא סַלְּקָא בֵּיהּ נְהוֹרָא דְּנִשְׁמְתָא, יְבָטְשׁוּן בֵּיהּ, וִיסַלֵק נְהִירוּ דְּנִשְׁמְתָא, וְיִתְאַחֲדוּן דָּא בְּדָא לְאַנְהָרָא.

207. A body exists but the light of the soul does not illuminate in it until they hit it. Then the light of the soul brightens and gets unified with the body, and the body is unified with it. When its light is lit from the soul, the body glorifies and exults and praises and lays out its prayer and request and blesses its Master. Behold, then everything is bright. AND THEREFORE THERE IS SUCH A THING AS A RIGHTEOUS MAN WHO SUFFERS.

207. בְּגִין דְּאִית גּוּפָא דִּנְהִירוּ דְּנִשְׁמְתָא לָא נָהִיר בֵּיהּ, עַד דִּיבַטְּשׁוּן בֵּיהּ, כְּדֵין נָהִיר נְהִירוּ דְּנִשְׁמְתָא, וְאִתְאֲחָדָת בְּגוּפָא, וְגוּפָא אִתְאֲחָד בָּהּ. גּוּפָא כְּדֵין סָלִיק נְהִירוּ מִגּוֹ נִשְׁמְתָא, מְהַדַּר מְרוֹמַם וּמְשַׁבַּח, מְצַלֵּי צְלוֹתֵיהּ וּבָעוּתֵיהּ, מְבָרֵךְ לְמָארֵיהּ, הָא כְּדֵין כֹּלָּא נָהִיר. בְּגִין דְּאִית גּוּפָא, דְּלָא יָכִילַת נִשְׁמְתָא לְאַנְהָרָא בֵּיהּ, עַד דִּיבַטְּשׁוּן בֵּיהּ, כְּדֵין נָהִיר וְאִתְאֲחָד דָּא בְּדָא. אִית אָעָא דְּלָא אִתְאֲחָד בִּנְהוֹרָא, וְלָא סָלִיק נְהוֹרָא בֵּיהּ, עַד דִּיבַטְּשׁוּן בֵּיהּ, וּכְדֵין נָהִיר.

208. The Other Side wishes to do the same thing and hits the wicked. As much as he punishes by hitting them, it is written: "But the candle of the wicked shall be put out" (Mishlei 13:9), since he blasphemes and curses in all directions and is incapable of illumination at all. It is then written: "For what can the man do who comes after the king?" (Kohelet 2:12), for he wishes to imitate him but is incapable of it. Therefore, "Hashem tries the righteous" (Tehilim 11:5) and hits him. Then he shines and gets strengthened with the light - "tries" is as it says in: "a tried stone" (Yeshayah 25:16). Rabbi Shimon bent over and kissed the dust. He said, Word, word, I have chased you since the day I became A MAN. And now this matter is revealed to me from the source and essence of everything.

208. סִטְרָא אַחֲרָא, בָּעֵי לְמֶעְבַּד הָכִי, וּבָטַשׁ בְּחַיָּיבַיָּא, וְכָל מַה דְּבָטַשׁ, כְּדֵין וְנֵר רְשָׁעִים יִדְעָךְ. מְחָרֵף וּמְגַדֵּף לְכָל סִטְרִין, וְלָא יָכִיל לְאַנְהֲרָא כְּלַל, וּכְדֵין כְּתִיב כִּי מֶה הָאָדָם שֶׁיָּבֹא אַחֲרֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ. וּבָעֵי לְאִתְדָּמֵי לֵיהּ, וְלָא יָכִיל. וְעַל דָּא יְיָ' צַדִּיק יִבְחָן, וּבָטַשׁ בֵּיהּ, וּכְדֵין נָהִיר וְאִתָּקַף בִּנְהִירוּ. יִבְחָן, כד"א אֶבֶן בֹּחַן. גָּחִין ר' שִׁמְעוֹן, וְנָשִׁיק לְעַפְרָא. אָמַר, מִלָּה מִלָּה אֲבַתְרָךְ רְדִיפְנָא, מִיּוֹמָא דַּהֲוֵינָא, וְהַשְׁתָּא אִשְׁתְּמוֹדְעָא לִי מִלָּה, מִגּוֹ שָׁרְשָׁא וְעִקָּרָא דְּכֹלָּא.

209. He said to him, Oh Rabbi, oh Rabbi. When all the spirits, male and female, ascend, AT NIGHT DURING SLEEP, at that time they hear new and old matters. They descend and enter into the Yeshivah and the matters are repeated to the head of the Yeshivah, and he teaches them every matter well. When they leave, they undress from their robes OF THIS WORLD and ascend. When they descend, THEY AGAIN dress up in the robes of that body.

209. אָ"ל, אִי רִבִּי, אִי רִבִּי, כַּד סַלְּקִין לְעֵילָּא, כָּל אִינּוּן רוּחִין דְּכוּרִין וְנוּקְבִין, בְּהַהוּא זִמְנָא, שַׁמְעִין מִלִּין חַדְתִּין וְעַתִּיקִין, נַחְתִּין וְעָאלִין לְגוֹ מְתִיבְתָּא, וְאַהְדְּרָן מִלֵּי קַמֵּי רַב מְתִיבְתָּא, וְאִיהוּ אוֹלִיף לוֹן מִלָּה עַל קִיּוּמֵיהּ. כַּד סַלְּקִין מִתְפַּשְּׁטִין מַלְבּוּשֵׁיהוֹן וְסַלְּקִין. כַּד נַחְתֵּי, מִתְלַבְּשִׁין בִּלְבוּשֵׁיהוֹן דְּהַהוּא גּוּפָא.
