100. The mixed multitudes are as it is written of them: "And when the people saw it, they were shaken, and they stood afar off" (Shemot 20:18). They will be far from the redemption and they will watch the Torah scholars and the Holy Nation in all this glory, but they will be far from them. If they wish to join with them, it is written: "No hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through" (Shemot 19:13). During that period, it will come true for Yisrael: "So Hashem did lead him, and there was no strange El with him" (Devarim 32:12). It was already explained that no new converts will be accepted during the days of the Messiah. "And the wicked shall be silent in darkness" (II Shmuel 2:9): these are the mixed multitudes. 100. וְעֵרֶב רַב כְּגַוְונָא דְּאִתְּמַר בְּהוֹן, וַיַּרְא הָעָם וַיָּנוּעוּ וַיַּעַמְדוּ מֵרָחוֹק. הָכִי יְהוֹן רְחִיקִין מִן פּוּרְקָנָא, וְיֵחְמוּן לת"ח, וּלְעַמָא קַדִּישָׁא בְּכָל הַאי יְקָר, וְאִינּוּן רְחִיקִין מִינַּיְיהוּ. וְאִי בָּעוּ לְאִתְחַבְּרָא בַּהֲדַיְיהוּ מַה כְּתִיב בְּהוּ, לֹא תִגַּע בּוֹ יָד כִּי סָקוֹל יִסָּקֵל אוֹ יָרֹה יִיָּרֶה. בְּהַהוּא זִמְנָא יִתְקַיֵּים בְּהוּ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, יְיָ' בָּדָד יַנְחֶנּוּ וְאֵין עִמּוֹ אֵל נֵכָר, וְהָא אוּקְמוּהָ אֵין מְקַבְּלִין גֵּרִים לִימוֹת הַמָּשִׁיחַ. וּרְשָׁעִים בַּחֹשֶׁךְ יִדָּמוּ, אִינּוּן עֵרֶב רַב. ובג"ד אָמַר נְבִיאָה עָלַיְיהוּ, וְאֶל אַדְמַת יִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא יָבֹאוּ.

101. Elijah said TO THE FAITHFUL SHEPHERD: Faithful Shepherd, it is time to rise up, AND BRING THE FULL REDEMPTION. You intone a solemn oath ON ME, MEANING MAKE ME SWEAR THAT I SHOULD HASTEN THE REDEMPTION. For your sake, I wish to rise, since the Holy One, blessed be He, gave me permission to reveal myself to you in your prison, in your place of burial, and do you good because you are desecrated through the sins of the people. LIKE IN A PRISON, HE IS AMONG THEM. This is the meaning of: "But he was wounded because of our transgressions" (Yeshayah 53:5).

101. אָמַר אֵלִיָּהוּ, רַעְיָא מְהֵימָנָא, הָא שַׁעֲתָא אִיהִי לְסַלְּקָא לְעֵילָּא, בְּאוֹמָאָה אִימָּא אַנְתְּ, דְּהָא בְּגִינָךְ אֲנָא בָּעֵי לְסַלְּקָא. דְּיָהִיב לִי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא רְשׁוּ, לְאִתְגַּלְיָיא לָךְ בְּבֵית אֲסוּרִים דִּילָךְ, בִּקְבוּרָה דִּילָךְ, וּלְמֶעְבַּד עִמָּךְ טִיבוּ, דְּאַנְתְּ מְחוֹלָל בְּחוֹבִין דְּעַמָּא. הה"ד וְהוּא מְחוֹלָל מִפְּשָׁעֵינוּ.

102. The Faithful Shepherd said to him: I intone on you solemnly the name of Yud Hei Vav Hei, that you will do your utmost not to delay THE REDEMPTION, since I am EXISTING in great distress. The wisdom of the scribes shall become vapid (stinking) among them in each and every city, and in all places where Yisrael are scattered throughout their kingdoms. The mixed multitudes become the shepherds of Yisrael, who are the flock of the Holy One, blessed be He, as it is said about them: "But you, my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men" (Yechezkel 34:31). And they have no ability to do good with the Torah scholars.

102. א"ל רַעְיָא מְהֵימָנָא, בְּאוֹמָאָה עֲלָךְ בִּשְׁמָא דִּיְדֹוָ"ד, לָא תְּאַחֵר בְּכָל יְכוֹלְתָּךְ, דְּהָא אֲנָא בְּצַעֲרָא סַגֵּי. וַיִּפֶן כֹּה וָכֹה וַיַּרְא כִּי אֵין אִישׁ, עוֹזֵר לִי, לְאַפָּקָא לִי מֵהַאי צַעֲרָא, בְּהַאי קְבוּרָה דְּאִתְּמַר עָלַי, וַיִּתֵּן אֶת הָרְשָׁעִים קִבְרוֹ, וְלָא אִשְׁתְּמוֹדְעָן בִּי, וַאֲנִי חָשִׁיב בְּעֵינַיְיהוּ בֵּין עֵרֶב רַב רַשִׁיעֲיָיא, כְּכֶּלֶב מֵת דְּסָּרַח בֵּינַיְיהוּ, דְּחָכְמַת סוֹפְרִים תִּסְרַח בֵּינַיְיהוּ, בְּכָל קַרְתָּא וְקַרְתָּא, וּבְכָל אֲתָר דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל מְפוּזָרִין בֵּינַיְיהוּ בֵּין מַלְכְּוָון. וְאִתְהַדְּרוּ אִינּוּן עֵרֶב רַב רַעְיָין עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל, עָאנָא דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, דְּאִתְּמַר בְּהוּ וְאַתֵּן צֹאנִי צֹאן מַרְעִיתִי אָדָם אַתֶּם, וְלֵית לוֹן יְכוֹלֶת לְמֶעְבַּד טִיבוּ עִם ת"ח.

103. Able and sin-fearing men go about from one city to another and find no grace, and the mixed multitudes excommunicate them from among them. In many places, they are only given a meager sum so they are unable to rise from their fall, even temporarily. All the sages, able men and those who fear sin LIVE in distress and gloom and are treated like dogs. "The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers" (Eichah 4:2), in the streets, unable to find accommodation among them.

103. וְאַנְשֵׁי חַיִל וְיִרְאֵי חֵטְא מְסוֹבְבִים מֵעִיר לָעִיר וְלֹא יְחוֹנָנוּ, וּמַחֲרִימִין עֵרֶב רַב בֵּינַיְיהוּ. וְלָא יַהֲבִין לוֹן בְּאַתְרִין סַגִּיאִין אֶלָּא דָּבָר קָצוּב, דְּלָא יְהֵא תְּקוּמָה לִנְפִילוּ דִּלְהוֹן, וַאֲפִילּוּ חַיֵּי שָׁעָה. וְכָל חֲכָמִים וְאַנְשֵׁי חַיִל וְיִרְאֵי חֵטְא בְּצַעֲרָא בְּדוֹחֲקָא בִּיגוֹנָא, חֲשִׁיבִין כִּכְלָבִים. בָּנִים הַמְסוּלָאִים בַּפָּז אֵיכָה נֶחְשְׁבוּ לְנִבְלֵי חֶרֶשׂ בְּרֹאשׁ כָּל חוּצוֹת. דְּלָא אַשְׁכָּחוּ אַכְסַנְיָא בֵּינַיְיהוּ.

104. וְאִינּוּן עֵרֶב רַב, אִינּוּן עֲתִירִין, בְּשַׁלְוָה, בְּחֶדְוָוא, בְּלָא צַעֲרָא, בְּלָא יְגוֹנָא כְּלָל, גַּזְלָנִין מָארֵי שׁוֹחַד, דְּאִינּוּן דַּיָּינִין רֵישֵׁי עַמָּא. כִּי מָלְאָה הָאָרֶץ חָמָס מִפְּנֵיהֶם, עָלַיְיהוּ אִתְּמַר הָיוּ צָרֶיהָ לְרֹאשׁ. בְּאוֹמָאָה עָלָךְ זִמְנָא תִּנְיָינָא, בְּחַי יְיָ' צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל יוֹשֵׁב הַכְּרוּבִים, דְּכָל אִלֵּין מִלִּין לָא יִפְּלוּן מִפּוּמָךְ, בְּכָל יְכָלְתָּךְ לְמַלְּלָא בְּהוֹן קַמֵּי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, וּלְאַחְזָאָה דּוֹחֲקָא דִּלְהוֹן.
