The cave of the Machpelah

Synopsis

Rabbi Elazar is told about how all the patriarchs are buried with their wives in the Cave of Machpelah, and exactly how they were laid out in the cave, women next to women and men next to men. And as these pairs were buried, so they will rise in the exact same manner; then Leah will rejoice with Messiah the son of David, who is her offspring and Rachel will rejoice with Messiah the son of Joseph, who is her offspring.

132. (THE BEGINNING IS MISSING HERE.) Elazar, my son, according to what you have learned, you speak intelligently. However, heaven forbid, even though Rachel was barren during that period, Jacob was wise. And if he would not have known that Leah was his wife, he would not have buried her in the cave OF MACHPELAH to be continuously next to her. Instead, he would have buried her outside of the cave. However, he brought Leah to the land, THAT IS THE CAVE OF MACHPELAH, and Rachel he interred outside OF THE CAVE OF MACHPELAH. When Jacob died, he was buried inside THE CAVE OF MACHPELAH, jointly WITH LEAH.

132. אֶלְעָזָר בְּרִי, שַׁפִּיר קָאַמָרְת, כְּפוּם מַה דְּאוֹלִיפַת. אֲבָל ח"ו, דאע"ג דְּרָחֵל הֲוַת עֲקָּרָא בְּהַהוּא זִימְנָא, יַעֲקֹב חַכִּים הֲוָה. וְאִלְמָלֵא לָא יָדַע יַעֲקֹב, דְּלֵאָה אִנְתְּתֵיהּ, לָא קָבִיר לָהּ בִּמְעַרְתָּא, לְאִתְחַבְּרָא בַּהֲדֵּיהּ, בְּחִבּוּרָא חֲדָא, וִיהֵא קָבִיר לָהּ לְבַר מֵאַרְעָא. אֲבָל לְלֵאָה אָעִיל לָהּ גּוֹ אַרְעָא, וּלְרָחֵל שַׁוֵּי לְבַר. מִית יַעֲקֹב, אִתְקְבַר בְּגַוָּוה, בְּחִבּוּרָא חֲדָא.

133. As the rest of the patriarchs did, so did Adam. Eve died first and was buried there, IN THE CAVE OF MACHPELAH, and there Adam became aware that this place was appropriate for him. When Adam died, he was buried there jointly WITH EVE. When Sarah died, she was buried there. Eve saw her and was glad, and she rose and welcomed her. The measured DISTANCE of Eve from Sarah is two cubits and not more. Abraham died and was buried next to Sarah, jointly connected WITH HER. Rivkah died and she was buried there. Sarah saw this, and rose and welcomed her. When Isaac died, he was jointly buried with her jointly. When Leah died, she was buried there and Rivkah rose and welcomed her. When Jacob died, he joined her to be together. And all were male and female together, jointly united.

133. כְּמָה דְּעָבְדוּ כָּל שְׁאַר אֲבָהָן, אוֹף הָכִי אָדָם. מֵתָה חַוָּה בְּקַדְמֵיתָא, אִתְקַבְּרַת תַּמָּן. וְתַמָּן יָדַע אָדָם, דְּהַאי דּוּכְתָּא אִתְחֲזֵי לֵיהּ. מִית אָדָם, אִתְקְבַר בְּגַוָּוה בְּחִבּוּרָא חֲדָא. מֵתָה שָׂרָה אִתְקַבְּרַת תַּמָּן, וְחַוָּה חָמָאת, וְחַדָּאת לָקֳבְלָהּ, וְקָמַת וְקַבָּלָה לָהּ. שִׁיעוּרָא דְּחַוָּה לְגַבֵּי שָׂרָה, שִׁיעוּרָא דִּתְרֵין אַמִּין, וְלָא יַתִּיר. מֵת אַבְרָהָם, אִתְקְבַר לְגַבֵּי שָׂרָה, בְּחִבּוּרָא חֲדָא. מֵתָה רִבְקָה, אִתְקַבְּרַת תַּמָּן, וְשָׂרָה חָמָאת, וְקָמַת וְקִבְּלַת לָהּ. מֵת יִצְחָק, אִתְקְבַר בַּהֲדָהּ בְּחִבּוּרָא חֲדָא. מֵתָה לֵאָה, אִתְקַבְּרַת תַּמָּן, וְרִבְקָה חָמָאת, וְקָמַת, וְקַבָּלָה לָהּ. מֵת יַעֲקֹב, אִתְחֲבָּר בַּהֲדָהּ בְּחִבּוּרָא חֲדָא. וְכֻלְּהוּ דְּכַר וְנוּקְבָּא כַּחֲדָא, בְּחִבּוּרָא חֲדָא.

134. HE INQUIRES: In what order were they laid out? HE RESPONDS: Women next to women and men next to men. Adam at first and, next to him, Eve. Sarah is next to Eve, Abraham is close to Sarah, Isaac is close to Abraham, Rivkah is close to Isaac, Leah is close to Rivkah and Jacob is next to Leah. The result leaves Adam on this side and Jacob on the other side, one at the beginning and one at the end.

134. סִדּוּרָא דִּלְהוֹן הֵיךְ שָׁכְנֵי. נָשִׁין לְגַבֵּי נָשִׁין, וּדְכוּרִין לְגַבֵּי דְּכוּרִין. אָדָם בְּרֵישָׁא, חַוָּה סָמִיךְ לֵיהּ. שָׂרָה לְגַבֵּי חַוָּה. אַבְרָהָם סָמִיךְ לְשָׂרָה. יִצְחָק סָמִיךְ לְאַבְרָהָם. רִבְקָה סָמִיךְ לְיִצְחָק. לֵאָה סָמִיךְ לְרִבְקָה. יַעֲקֹב סָמִיךְ לְלֵאָה. אִשְׁתְּכַח אָדָם בְּסִטְרָא דָּא, יַעֲקֹב בְּסִטְרָא דָּא, דָּא רֵישָׁא, וְדָא סֵיפָא.

135. In the book of King Solomon, it is properly set. So it is Adam and Eve at first, Sarah and Abraham nearby, Isaac and Rivkah in the other corner OPPOSITE in a straight line and Jacob and Leah in the middle. They are women next to women and men next to men; that is Adam and Eve, Sarah and Abraham, Jacob and Leah and Rivkah and Isaac. THE RESULT IS that Adam is in one end and Isaac is in the other far end. Jacob is in the middle, as for Isaac to be next to his father is not the custom. Therefore, it was necessary for Jacob to be in the middle.

135. בְּסִפְרָא דִּשְׁלֹמֹה מַלְכָּא אִיהוּ כַּדְּקָא יָאוּת וְהָכִי הוּא, אָדָם וְחַוָּה בְּקַדְמֵיתָא. וְשָׂרָה וְאַבְרָהָם סָמִיךְ לוֹן. יִצְחָק וְרִבְקָה לְזִוְיָא אַחֲרָא, בְּאֹרַח מֵישָׁר בְּשׁוּרָה חֲדָא. יַעֲקֹב וְלֵאָה בְּאֶמְצָעִיתָא. וְאִינּוּן נָשִׁין לְגַבֵּי נָשִׁין. וּדְכוּרִין לְגַבֵּי דְּכוּרִין. וְאָדָם וְחַוָּה, שָׂרָה וְאַבְרָהָם, יַעֲקֹב וְלֵאָה, רִבְקָה וְיִצְחָק. אָדָם בְּסִטְרָא דָּא, וְיִצְחָק בְּסִטְרָא דָּא, וְיַעֲקֹב בְּאֶמְצָעִיתָא. יִצְחָק לְגַבֵּי אֲבוּהָ לָאו אֹרַח עָלְמָא. ועכ"ד יַעֲקֹב אִצְטְרִיךְ בְּאֶמְצָעִיתָא.

136. And all these pairs, as they were buried, in the same manner they will rise AT THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD. And so it will happen. Leah will rejoice with Messiah, the son of David, who is her offspring, inside THE CAVE OF MACHPELAH. Rachel will rejoice with Messiah, the son of Joseph, who is her offspring, outside of Jerusalem - MEANING WHERE SHE WAS BURIED, ON THE WAY TO EFRAT - and each one in his place.

136. וּבְכָל אִינּוּן זוּגִין, כְּמָה דְּאִתְקְבָרוּ, הָכִי יְקוּמוּן, וְהָכִי יִשְׁתַּכְּחוּן. לֵאָה תֶּחֱדֵי בַּהֲדֵי מָשִׁיחַ, בְּרֵיהּ דְּדָוִד, דְּנָפִיק מִנָּהּ לְגוֹ. רָחֵל תֶּחֱדֵי בַּהֲדֵי מָשִׁיחַ, בְּרֵיהּ דְּיוֹסֵף, דְּנָפִיק מִנָּהּ לְבַר מִירוּשְׁלֵם. וְכֹלָּא לְדוּכְתַּיְיהוּ.
