The judgment of one person that stood at the entrance to the Garden of Eden

Synopsis

The emissary returns with a letter for Rabbi Shimon, which the Rabbi reads all night until the letter flies away in the morning. The emissaries tell him about the judgment of a man standing at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, where the man is sentenced to remain outside in pain for forty days and then be tortured in Gehenom for an hour and a half. These punishments arose since the man put another friend to shame by not assisting him when he was trying to define some points in Torah.

191. Instantly, he returned to them and said to them, I was ready to enter and everyone was in one circle, MEANING THEY WERE SEATED IN A CIRCLE. They were in session judging a person that stood at the entrance to the Garden of Eden. The Cherubs grabbed him and did not allow him to enter there. He was in pain between them and was screaming loudly in the entrance. All the just that were there heard, and now all the members of that Yeshivah gathered to enter to the Messiah, to give some thought about the judgment. And I came to inform you. And my associate here needs to go there, since a proclamation was passed among all the members of the Yeshivah that they should gather to welcome the Messiah. He took a letter and presented it to Rabbi Shimon. He said, Take it and peruse what is WRITTEN in it, until we come back to you. Both flew away.

191. וּלְפוּם שַׁעֲתָא תָּב לְגַבַּיְיהוּ, אָמַר לוֹן, זְמִינָא הֲוֵינָא לְמֵיעָאל, וַהֲווֹ כֻּלְּהוּ בְּעִטּוּרָא חֲדָא, דְּדַיָּינֵי דִּינָא דְּחַד בַּר נָשׁ, דְּקָאֵים עַל פִּתְחָא דְּגַן עֵדֶן, וְאִינּוּן כְּרוּבִין אֲחִידוּ בֵּיהּ, וְלָא שָׁבְקוּ לֵיהּ לְמֵיעָאל תַּמָּן, וַהֲוָה בְּצַעֲרָא בֵּינַיְיהוּ, וְצָוַוח צַוְוחִין עַל גַּבֵּי פִּתְחָא, וּשְׁמָעוּ כּוּלְהוּ צַדִּיקַיָּיא דְּתַמָּן, וְהַשְׁתָּא הֲווֹ מִתְכַּנְּפֵי כָּל בְּנֵי מְתִיבְתֵּי, לְמֵיעָאל לְגַבֵּי מַלְכָּא מְשִׁיחָא, לְעַיְּינָא בְּדִינֵיהּ. וַאֲתֵינָא לְאוֹדָעָא לְכוּ, וְדָא חַבְרָאי אִצְטְרִיךְ לְמֵהַךְ תַּמָּן, דְּכָרוֹזָא הֲוָה אַעְבָּר בְּכָל אִינּוּן בְּנֵי מְתִיבְתֵּי. דְּלִיהֱווֹן כְּנִישִׁין הַשְׁתָּא קַמֵּי מָשִׁיחַ. נָטַל פִּתְקָא חֲדָא, וְיָהַב לר' שִׁמְעוֹן. אָמַר, טוֹל דָּא, וְעָיֵין בְּמָה דְּתַמָּן, עַד דְּנֵיתֵי גַּבָּךְ, פַּרְחוּ תַּרְוַויְיהוּ.

192. Rabbi Shimon took the note and saw whatever he saw of the secrets that were in it all day long. At night, he saw a candle, sleepiness overcame him and he fell asleep until morning. When daylight broke, the letter rose and flew away from him. Behold, those two arrived. They told him, Get up, Rabbi. Blessed is your lot, rise. Due to you, we saw and deserved to know several supernal secrets. We were shown so much gladness when they permitted us to reveal to you all that you desire. The head of the highest Yeshivah came out to us and said, Give greetings to the son of Yochai. The son of Yochai's place has been waiting for him for several days and there is nobody that comes close to him. Happy is he.

192. וְר' שִׁמְעוֹן נָטַל פִּתְקָא, וְחָמָא מַה דְּחָמָא, בְּרָזִין דְּתַמָּן, כָּל הַהוּא יוֹמָא. בְּלֵילְיָא חָמָא שְׁרָגָא, וְנָפִיל בֵּיהּ שֵׁינָתָא, וְדָמַךְ עַד צַפְרָא. כַּד נָהָר יְמָמָא, קָם וּפָרַח הַהוּא פִּתְקָא מִנֵּיהּ, וְהָא אִינּוּן תַּרְוַויְיהוּ אַתְיָין, אָמַר לֵיהּ, קוּם רִבִּי, זַכָּאָה חוּלָקָךְ, קוּם. בְּגִינָךְ חֲמֵינָן וְזָכֵינָן לְכַמָּה סִתְרִין עִלָּאִין, כַּמָה חֶדְוָה אַחְזִיוּ לָן, כַּד יָהֲבוּ רְשׁוּ לְגַלָּאָה לָךְ, כָּל מַה דְּאַתְּ בָּעֵי. רֵישׁ מְתִיבְתָּא עִלָּאָה נָפַק לְגַבָּן, וְאָמַר, שָׁאִילוּ בִּשְׁלָמֵיהּ דְּבַר יוֹחָאי, אַתְרֵיהּ דְּבַר יוֹחָאי, הָא פָּנוּ לֵיהּ מִכַּמָּה יוֹמִין. לֵית מַאן דְּיִקְרַב לְגַבֵּיהּ, זַכָּאָה אִיהוּ.

193. Rabbi, Rabbi. When we flew away from you, we entered and saw all the members of the Yeshivah gathering to a certain sanctuary where the Messiah was present. They were discussing the judgment of that man that stood at the entrance. We have no authority to reveal his name. Rabbi Shimon became sad about it. He told him, Do not feel sad about this, Rabbi, you will get to know all about this, this night in your dream. However, they passed a judgment about him in accordance with the edict of the Messiah, that this person shall remain outside with this pain for forty days. At the end of forty days, he will be tortured with the pain of Gehenom for an hour and a half.

193. רִבִּי רִבִּי, כַּד פָּרַחְנָא מִגַּבָּךְ, עָאלָנָא וַחֲמֵינָא כָּל בְּנֵי מְתִיבְתֵּי, דְּהָא מִתְכַּנְּפֵי לְגוֹ הֵיכָלָא חֲדָא, דְּמָשִׁיחַ תַּמָּן, וְדַיְינוּ דִינָא דְּהַהוּא בַּר נָשׁ, דְּקָאֵים עַל פִּתְחָא, שְׁמֵיהּ לֵית לָן רְשׁוּ לְגַלָּאָה. אִצְטָעַר ר' שִׁמְעוֹן עַל דָּא, אָמַר לֵיהּ, לָא תִּצְטַעָר רִבִּי עַל דָּא, אַנְתְּ תֵּדַע בְּדָא לֵילְיָא בְּחֶלְמָךְ. אֲבָל דִּינָא דַּיְינוּ עָלֵיהּ, דְּגָזַר מָשִׁיחַ, דְּלִהֱוֵי הַהוּא בַּר נָשׁ לְבַר בְּהַהוּא צַעֲרָא אַרְבְּעִין יוֹמִין. לְסוֹף אַרְבְּעִין יוֹמִין, יְצַעֲרוּן לֵיהּ בְּדִינָא, בְּצַעֲרָא דְּגֵיהִנָּם, שַׁעֲתָא וּפַלְגָּא.

194. וְכָל דָּא, בְּגִין דְּיוֹמָא חֲדָא, חַד מִן חַבְרַיָּיא הֲוָה פָּרִישׁ מִלִּין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, כַּד מָטָא לְחַד מִלָּה, יָדַע הַאי ב"נ דְּיִתְכְּשַׁל בֵּיהּ, וְאָמַר לְחַבְרַיָּיא שְׁתּוֹקוּ, לָא תֵּימְרוּן מִדִי. וּבְגִין דִּשְׁתִּיקוּ חַבְרַיָּיא אִתְכְּשַׁל בְּהַהוּא מִלָּה, וְאִכְסִיף. וְהַהוּא כִּסּוּפָא. דְּגָרִים הַאי בַּר נָשׁ, דַּיְינִין לֵיהּ בְּהַאי דִּינָא קַשְׁיָא, בְּגִין דְּלָא בָּעֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְשַׁבְקָא חוֹבָא דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, אֲפִילּוּ כִּמְלֹא נִימָא.
