He who has no merit in this place

Synopsis

The emissaries are told things by the head of the Yeshivah that they had not been previously privileged to hear, because they were charged with revealing it to Rabbi Shimon. The topic has to do with God's admonition to Abram to leave his country; the head of the Yeshivah gives them the hidden meaning about the essence of the soul and why it does not shine in this place but is worthy to shine in a different place. He also tells them why levirate marriage allows a man's spirit to be rebuilt after he dies without having children. Rabbi Shimon asks the emissaries to find out if he can know whether women in the higher world get the opportunity to ascend higher.

187. THEY SAID TO HIM, The head of the Yeshivah opened the discussion saying, "Now Hashem said to Abram, 'Get you out of your country...'" (Beresheet 12:1). That is because the light shone to him in this manner, MEANING THAT THE HOLY ONE, BLESSED BE HE, TOLD HIM, "GET YOU OUT..." BECAUSE HE COULD NOT GET THE LIGHT IN ANOTHER MANNER, JUST IN THIS MANNER. Since he has no merit in this place, let him go and take himself to another place, and merit it there. If a piece of wood is lit and yet the light does not catch on and illuminate in it, let them shake it until the fire catches on and it shines. THE EMISSARIES said, We had been prepared to hear THE CONTINUATION OF THE TEACHINGS FROM THE HEAD OF THE YESHIVAH. However, since we have to come to you, we did not wish to tarry. Rabbi Shimon was glad.

187. פָּתַח רַב מְתִיבְתָּא וְאָמַר וַיֹּאמֶר יְיָ' אֶל אַבְרָם לֶךְ לְךָ מֵאַרְצְךָ וְגוֹ,' דָּא בְּגִין דְּאִתְנַהֲרָא בֵּיהּ נְהִירוּ כְּגַוְונָא דָּא. מַאן דְּלָא זָכֵי בַּאֲתָר דָּא, יְהַךְ וְיִנְטַל גַּרְמֵיהּ לַאֲתָר אַחֲרָא, וְיִזְכֶּי בֵּיהּ. אָעָא דְּדָלִיק, וּנְהוֹרָא לָא סָלִיק וְנָהִיר בֵּיהּ, יְנַעְנְעוּן לֵיהּ, וִיסַלֵק בֵּיהּ נְהוֹרָא, וְאַנְהִיר. וַהֲוֵינָן זְמִינִין לְמִשְׁמַע, אֲבָל בְּגִין לְמֵיתֵי גַּבָּךְ, לָא בָּעֵינָן לְאִתְעַכְּבָא, חַדֵּי ר' שִׁמְעוֹן.

188. They said to him, Oh, holy pious one. All our matters in the Torah are short and to the point, MEANING THEY WERE SAID IN VERY CONCISE FORM. How great and supernal are these succinct teachings, so as to be immeasurable, since we have no doubts but only wish to establish the clarity of the Torah. Now the head of the Yeshivah explained matters that are concealed over this, about the essence of the soul and why it does not shine in this place but is worthy to shine in a different place. Until now, we have not been worthy of it, because WE HAD TO come to you.

188. אָמְרוּ לֵיהּ, אִי חֲסִידָא קַדִּישָׁא, כָּל מִלִּין דִּי בְּגַוָּון בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, מִלִּין זְעִירִין אִינּוּן, בְּכָל מִלָּה וּמִלָּה. וְאִינּוּן מִלִּין זְעִירִין, כַּמָה אִינּוּן מִלִּין רַבְרְבִין וְעִלָּאִין, עַד דְּלֵית לוֹן שִׁיעוּרָא. דְּהָא לֵית בְּגַוָּון סְפֵקָא, אֶלָּא בְּרִירוּ דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא עַל בּוּרְיֵיהּ. וְהַשְׁתָּא רַב מְתִיבְתָּא פָּרִישׁ מִלִּין סְתִימִין עַל דָּא, בְּגִין דְּעִקָרָא דְּנִשְׁמְתָא, אֲמַאי לָא נָהִיר בַּאֲתָר דָּא, וְזָכֵי לְאִתְנַהֲרָא בַּאֲתָר אַחֲרָא. וְעַד כְּעַן לָא זָכֵינָן בְּהוּ, בְּגִין לְמֵיתֵי גַּבָּךְ.

189. וּמִלָּה אַחֲרָא זָכֵינָן לְמִשְׁמַע מִנֵּיהּ, רוּחָא דְּאַזְלָא בְּעִרְטוּרָא בְּהַהוּא עָלְמָא בְּלָא בְּנִין, אִנְתְּתֵיהּ יִתְעֲבִיד לֵיהּ מָאנָא לְאִתְבְּנָאָה אִיהוּ. מַאי טַעֲמָא. אִנְתְּתֵיהּ אִיהִי שְׁרָגָא, דְּאִתְדְּלִיקַת מִנֵּיהּ, וְתַרְוַויְיהוּ שְׁרָגָא חֲדָא הֲווֹ, נְהוֹרָא דָּא נָפַק מִנְּהוֹרָא דָּא, אִתְדָעַךְ דָּא, אִתְדְלִיק מִגּוֹ נְהוֹרֵיהּ מַמָּשׁ, בְּגִין דַּחֲדָא נְהוֹרָא הֲווֹ.

190. Now, Rabbi, let's get back to OUR first points. Meanwhile, one flew off, disappeared from them and went away.

190. הַשְׁתָּא רִבִּי, נֶהְדַּר לְמִלִּין קַדְמָאִין, וְכַד נֶהְדַּר לְאַתְרִין, נִטוֹל רְשׁוּ מֵרַב מְתִיבְתָּא, בְּאִינּוּן מִלִּין דִּנְקַבֵּל מִנֵּיהּ, וְנֵימָא קַמָּךְ. זַכָּאָה חוּלָקָךְ, דְּאַתְּ זָכֵי לִנְהוֹרִין סְתִימִין, מִכָּל סִטְרִין, מֵעֵילָּא וּמִתַּתָּא, מֵהַאי עָלְמָא, וּמֵעָלְמָא אוֹחֲרָא. אָמַר ר' שִׁמְעוֹן, מִלָּה חֲדָא בָּעֵינָא לְמִנְדַּע, אִי תֵּיכוּל לְאוֹדָעָא לִי. נָשִׁין בְּהַהוּא עָלְמָא, אִי זַכָּאִין לְסַלְּקָא לְעֵילָּא, אוֹ הֵיךְ אִינּוּן תַּמָּן. אָמַר לֵיהּ, אִי רִבִּי אִי רִבִּי, בְּדָא אִית לָן רָזָא יַקִּירָא. בְּגִין דְּלָא לְגַלָּאָה סִתְרִין דְּתַמָּן, אֲבָל דָּא יְהַךְ וְיִטּוֹל רְשׁוּ, וְנֵימָא לָךְ. אַדְּהָכִי פָּרַח חַד, וְאִתְכַּסֵּי מִנַּיְיהוּ, וְאָזַל לֵיהּ.
