As long as Moses was alive

Synopsis

Rabbi Chiya says that, since Moses, there has been no generation like his, who beheld the glory of God. At that time even a maid saw at the parting of the sea what Ezekiel could not see. If those people in the desert had such wisdom, how much more has Rabbi Shimon and those who study with him. In the future when Rabbi Shimon has departed, people will seek words of wisdom but they will be hidden, and there will be no one to reveal the depths of wisdom found in the Torah. Rabbi Yehuda says that at the time of The Messiah God will reveal the deep mysteries of the Torah, and everyone will know God, from the least of them to the greatest of them.

385. Rabbi Chiya opened the discussion with the verse: "And Hashem said to Moses, Behold, you shall sleep with your fathers..." (Devarim 31:16). Come and see: As long as Moses was alive in the world, he admonished Yisrael not to be found sinful before the Holy One, blessed be He. Since Moses was among them, there is no generation like that one until the generation when King Messiah will come, who beholds the glory of the Holy One, blessed be He, like they did, because they attained what no other generation did.

385. פָּתַח רִבִּי חִיָּיא וְאָמַר, וַיֹּאמֶר יְיָ' אֶל מֹשֶׁה הִנְּךָ שׁוֹכֵב עִם אֲבוֹתֶיךָ וְגוֹ.' ת"ח, כָּל זִמְנָא דַּהֲוָה מֹשֶׁה קַיָּים בְּעָלְמָא, הֲוָה מָמְחֵי בִּידַיְיהוּ דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, בְּגִין דְּלָא יִשְׁתַּכְּחוּן בְּחִיוּבָא קָמֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא וּבְגִין דְּמֹשֶׁה אִשְׁתְּכַח בֵּינַיְיהוּ לָא יְהֵא כְּהַהוּא דָּרָא עַד דָּרָא דְּיֵיתֵי מַלְכָּא מְשִׁיחָא דְּיֶחֱמוּ יְקָרָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא כְּוָותַיְיהוּ דְּאִינּוּן אִתְדַּבְּקוּ מַה דְּלָא אִתְדְּבָּקוּ דָּרִין אָחֳרָנִין.

386. We have learned that a maid saw on the sea what the eye of the prophet Ezekiel could not. If THE MAIDS reached thus far, all the more so the wives of Yisrael, and their children even more, and the men even more. The Sanhedrin all the more, and the chiefs even more, and all the more so the supernal, faithful prophet Moses, who is above everyone. Now, if these merchants in the desert uttered such wisdom, all the more so the sages of the generations and even more those who stay with Rabbi Shimon and study from him every day. All the more so to Rabbi Shimon, who is above everyone.

386. דְּתָנֵינָן, חָמָאת שִׁפְחָה חֲדָא עַל יַמָּא, מַה דְּלָא חָמָאת עֵינָא דִּיְחֶזְקֵאל נְבִיאָה. אִי אִינּוּן אִתְדָּבָּקוּ כָּל כַּךְ, נְשֵׁיהוֹן דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל כ"ש. בְּנַיְיהוּ כ"ש. גּוּבְרִין כ"ש. סַנְהֶדְרִין כ"ש. נְשִׂיאִים כ"ש, וכ"ש נְבִיאָה עִלָּאָה מְהֵימָנָא מֹשֶׁה, דְּאִיהוּ עַל כֹּלָּא. וְהַשְׁתָּא אִלֵּין טַיָּיעֵי מַדְבְּרָא מְרַחֲשִׁין חָכְמְתָא כָּל כַּךְ, כ"ש חַכִּימֵי דָּרָא, כ"ש אִינּוּן דְּקַיְימֵי קַמֵּיהּ דר"ש, וְאוֹלְפֵי מִינֵיהּ בְּכָל יוֹמָא. כ"ש וכ"ש ר"ש דְּהוּא עִלָּאָה עַל כֹּלָּא.

387. After Moses died, it is written, "And this people will rise up, and go astray..." (Ibid.). Woe to the world when Rabbi Shimon will depart from it, when the springs of wisdom will be sealed from the world, when man will seek words of wisdom, but there will be none to utter it. The whole world will err in the Torah and there shall be none to awaken it with wisdom. Of that time, it says, "And if the whole Congregation of Yisrael sin through ignorance" (Vayikra 4:13), NAMELY if they sin through ignorance of the Torah, it is because they will not know its ways. Why? Because "the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly" (Ibid.), for there will be no one to reveal the depth of the Torah and its ways. Woe to the generation then in the world!

387. בָּתַר דְּמִית מֹשֶׁה, מַה כְּתִיב, וְקָם הָעָם הַזֶּה וְזָנָה וְגוֹ.' כַּךְ, וַוי לְעָלְמָא כַּד יִסְתָּלַק מִנֵּיהּ ר"ש, דְּמַבּוּעֵי דְּחָכְמְתָא יִסְתְּתָמוּ מֵעָלְמָא, וְיִבְעֵי ב"נ מִלָּה דְּחָכְמְתָא, וְלָא יִשְׁכַּח מַאן דְּיֵימָא, וְטָעָאן כָּל עָלְמָא בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, בְּגִין דְּלָא יִשְׁתְּכַּח בֵּינַיְיהוּ, מַאן דְּאִתְּעַר בְּחָכְמְתָא. עַל הַהוּא זִמְנָא כְּתִיב, וְאִם כָּל עֲדַת יִשְׂרָאֵל יִשְׁגּוּ. וְאִם יִשְׁגּוּ בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, וְלָא יִנְדְּעוּן אוֹרְחָהָא, בְּמַאי הוּא, בְּגִין וְנֶעְלַּם דָּבָר מֵעֵינֵי הַקָּהָל, דְּלָא יִשְׁתְּכַּח מַאן דְּיָדַע לְגַלָּאָה עֲמִיקְתָא דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא וְאוֹרְחָהָא. וַוי לְאִינּוּן דָּרִין דְּמִשְׁתַּכְּחֵי כְּדֵין בְּעָלְמָא.

388. אָמַר רִבִּי יְהוּדָה, זַמִּין קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְגַלָּאָה רָזִין עֲמִיקִין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, בְּזִמְנָא דְּמַלְכָּא מְשִׁיחָא, בְּגִין דְּמָלְאָה הָאָרֶץ דֵּעָה אֶת יְיָ' כַּמַּיִם לַיָּם מְכַסִּים. וּכְתִיב, וְלֹא יְלַמְּדוּ עוֹד אִישׁ אֶת אָחִיו וְאִישׁ אֶת רֵעֵהוּ לֵאמֹר דְּעוּ אֶת יְיָ' כִּי כֻלָּם יֵדְעוּ אוֹתִי לְמִקְּטַנָּם וְעַד גְּדוֹלָם אכי"ר.
