"because I will call on the name of Hashem"

Synopsis

Rabbi Chiya makes it clear that God will only be close to those who call upon His name in truth. Part of this meaning is that God must be called upon with the quality of the Central Column, not from the aspect of the Left or Right.

Faith Wisdom

209. Rabbi Chiya said, From this verse, "BECAUSE I WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF HASHEM" (DEVARIM 32:3), I have learned celestial wisdom and it is so. Yet the end of the verse connects the knot of faith with the word "He," as it is written, "just and right is He," which means He is everything, He is one without division. For if you say that all these NAMES IN THE VERSE are many, it says again, "He," as they all amount to and connect and join into one. And HE is everything; He was, He is and He will be and He is one. Blessed is His name forever and ever. Hence matters are connected and the holy matters of the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, are joined.

209. א"ר חִיָּיא, הַאי קְרָא אוֹלִיפְנָא מִנֵיהּ חָכְמְתָא עִלָּאָה, וְהָכִי הוּא. אֲבָל סֵיפֵיהּ דִּקְרָא, מְקַשֵּׁר קִשְׁרָא דִּמְהֵימְנוּתָא, בְּמַאי דִּכְתִּיב הוּא. כד"א, צַדִּיק וְיָשָׁר הוּא. כְּלוֹמַר הוּא כֺּלָּא. הוּא חַד בְּלָא פֵּרוּדָא. דְּאִי תֵּימָא כָּל הָנֵי סַגִּיאִין אִינּוּן, חָזַר וְאָמַר הוּא, כֻּלְּהוּ סַלְּקִין וּמִתְקַשְּׁרָן וּמִתְאַחֲדָן בְּחַד. וְכֺלָּא, הוּא הָיָה, וְהוּא הֲוָה, וְהוּא יְהֵא. וְהוּא חַד. בְּרִיךְ שְׁמֵיהּ לְעָלַם וּלְעָלְמֵי עָלְמִין. ע"כ מִתְקַטְּרִין מִלִּין, וּמִתְאַחֲדִין מִלִּין קַדִּישִׁין, דִּשְׁמָא דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא.

210. Happy is the portion of he who calls the King and knows how to call Him properly. If he calls yet knows not upon whom he called, the Holy One, blessed be He, keeps away from him, as it is written, "Hashem is near to all those who call upon Him" (Tehilim 145:18). To whom is He near? It says again, "to all who call upon Him in truth" (Ibid.). Is there anyone who calls upon Him falsely? Rabbi Aba said, Yes, it is he who calls yet knows not upon whom he calls. Whence do we know that? From the words, "to all who call upon Him in truth." What is "in truth"? It is the seal of the King's ring, WHICH IS THE SECRET OF THE CENTRAL COLUMN THAT SEALS THE MOCHIN TOGETHER WITH MALCHUT THAT IS CALLED THE KING'S RING, which is overall perfection. This is the meaning of, "You will show truth to Jacob, loyal love to Abraham" (Michah 7:20), NAMELY ZEIR ANPIN THAT IS THE CENTRAL COLUMN CALLED JACOB, AS TRUTH WAS BESTOWED ON THE CENTRAL COLUMN. This is why it is written, "to all who call upon Him in truth." AND WHOEVER KNOWS NOT TO CALL UPON HIM WITH THE QUALITY OF THE CENTRAL COLUMN, BUT TENDS TO THE LEFT COLUMN OR THE RIGHT COLUMN, THE HOLY ONE, BLESSED BE HE, DRAWS AWAY FROM HIM. Happy is the portion of whoever entered WISDOM and came out whole, to know the ways of the Holy One, blessed be He. Hence it is written, "But the path of just men is like the gleam of sunlight" (Mishlei 4:18), and, "Your people also shall be all righteous..." (Yeshayah 60:21).

210. זַכָּאָה חוּלָקֵיהּ מַאן דְּקָרֵי לְמַלְכָּא, וְיִנְדַּע לְמִקְרֵי כַּדְּקָא יָאוּת. וְאִי אִיהוּ קָרֵי וְלֺֹא יְדַע לְמַאן קָרֵי, אִתְרְחִיק קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא מִנֵּיהּ, דִּכְתִּיב קָרוֹב יְיָ' לְכָל קוֹרְאָיו וְגוֹ.' קָרוֹב יְיָ' לְכָל קוֹרְאָיו, לְמַאן קָרוֹב. חָזַר וְאָמַר, לְכֺל אֲשֶׁר יִקְרָאוּהוּ בֶאֱמֶת, וְכִי אִית מַאן דְּיִקְרֵי לֵיהּ בְּשִׁקְרָא. א"ר אַבָּא אִין, הַהוּא מַאן דְּקָרֵי וְלֺֹא יְדַע לְמַאן דְּקָרֵי. מְנָלָן. דִּכְתִּיב לְכֺל אֲשֶׁר יִקְרָאוּהוּ בֶאֱמֶת. מַאי בֶאֱמֶת. בְּחוֹתָמָא דְּגוּשְׁפַּנְקָא דְּמַלְכָּא, דְּהוּא שְׁלִימוּ דְּכֺלָּא. הה"ד, תִתֵּן אֱמֶת לְיַעֲקֺב חֶסֶד לְאַבְרָהָם. ובג"כ לְכֺל אֲשֶׁר יִקְרָאוּהוּ בֶאֱמֶת כְּתִיב. זַכָּאָה חוּלָקֵיהּ דְּמַאן דְּעָאל, וְנָפַק לְמִנְדַּע אָרְחוֹי דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא. וע"ד כְּתִיב, וְאֺרַח צַדִּיקִים כְּאוֹר נוֹגַהּ וְגוֹ.' וּכְתִיב וְעַמֵּךְ כֻּלָּם צַדִּיקִים וְגוֹ.'
