"And he put them all together into custody"

Synopsis

The verses relate the twelve signs of the zodiac to the twelve sons of Jacob and the twelve tribes of Israel. Joseph, who shows mercy to his treacherous brother, becomes a Patriarch. Rabbi Elazar speculates on the hidden meaning of this occurrence.

Relevance

Celestial influences arising from the twelve Signs impel, but they do not compel. We have the power to rise above their influence. We transcend the signs and their corresponding negative influences as we visually connect with these ancient mystical texts.

Shechem

161. "And he put them all together into custody for three days" (Beresheet 42:17). Rabbi Elazar asked, Why for three days? HE ANSWERS, These three days correspond to the days of Shchem, of which it is written, "And it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain" (Beresheet 34: 25).

161. וַיֶּאֱסוֹף אוֹתָם אֶל מִשְׁמָר שְׁלשֶׁת יָמִים. אֲמַר רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר, הַנֵּי תְּלַת יוֹמִין אַמַּאי. אֶלָּא הַנֵּי תְּלַת יוֹמִין, לָקֳבֵיל תְּלַת יוֹמִין דִּשְׁכֶם, דִּכְתִיב וַיְהִי בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי בִּהְיוֹתָם כּוֹאֲבִים.

162. Come and behold, It is written with regard to this, "And Joseph said to them on the third day, 'this do, and live'." This teaches us that he did not act toward them as they did toward Shchem. They made the people of Shchem accept upon them this (Heb. zot) - THE NUKVA CALLED 'THIS,' and the secret of the Covenant, BECAUSE THE COVENANT, WHICH IS THE SECRET OF YESOD, IS ATTACHED TO HER. And when they were circumcised, they were killed and not even one witness left. But he said, It is written, "This do, and live," THAT IS, HE WILL LET THEM LIVE. The reason is that "I fear the Elohim" who keeps the Covenant. And everything he did was only for the sake of Benjamin, THAT IS, TO MAKE THEM BRING BENJAMIN.

162. תָּא חֲזֵי מַה כְּתִיב בֵּיהּ, וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם יוֹסֵף בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי זֹאת עֲשׂוּ וִחְיוּ. לְאַחֲזָאָה, דָּא עָבַד אִיהוּ, כְּמָה דְּאִינוּן עָבְדוּ בִשְׁכֶם, דְּגָרְמוּ לְאַנְשֵׁי שְׁכֶם לְקַבְּלָא עֲלַיְיהוּ הַאי זֹאת, רָזָא דִבְרִית, וּלְבָתַר דַּעֲבָדוּ קִיּוּמָא דָא, קְטִילוּ לוֹן, וְלָא אִשְׁתָּאַר מִנְּהוֹן חַד, וְאִיהוּ מַה כְּתִיב, זֹאת עֲשׂוּ וִחְיוּ, מ"ט בְּגִין דְּאֶת הָאֱלֹקִים אֲנִי יָרֵא, נָטֵיר קְיָימָא, וְכָל גִּלְגּוּלָא דָא לָא הֲוָה, אֶלָּא בְּגִינֵיהּ דְּבִנְיָמִין.

Simeon

163. "And they said one to the other, truly we are guilty concerning our brother" (Beresheet 42:21). The phrase, "one to another (lit. 'man to his brother')" refers to Simeon and Levi, just as in an earlier passage, "And they said one to another, behold, this dreamer comes" (Beresheet 37:19). Both verses refer to Simeon and Levi.

163. וַיֹּאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל אָחִיו אֲבָל אֲשֵׁמִים אֲנַחְנוּ עַל אָחִינוּ וגו.' וַיֹּאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל אָחִיו: דָּא שִׁמְעוֹן וְלֵוִי, כְּמָה דַּהֲוָה בְּקַדְמֵיתָא, דִּכְתִיב וַיֹּאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל אָחִיו הִנֵּה בַּעַל הַחֲלוֹמוֹת הַלָּזֶה בָּא, מַה לְּהַלָּן שִׁמְעוֹן וְלֵוִי, אוֹף הָכָא שִׁמְעוֹן וְלֵוִי.

164. Come and behold, Who is the "man" and who is "his brother?" HE ANSWERS, The man is Simeon, who is here mentioned as man, as he is elsewhere, IN THE VERSE, "And behold, a man of the children of Yisrael came" (Bemidbar 25:6). In both verses, the man is Simeon. And since he repented, he cried and felt remorse for what he did and said to Levi, "truly we are guilty." Therefore WHEN HE REPENTED, Simeon's sign became Taurus. THERE ARE TWELVE SIGNS THAT CORRESPOND TO THE TWELVE TRIBES, ARIES TO REUBEN, TAURUS TO SIMEON, AND SO ON. Simeon's sign is Taurus, just as Joseph's sign is, as it is written, "His firstling bullock, majesty is his" (Devarim 33:17).

164. תָּא חֲזֵי, מַאן אִישׁ. וּמַאן אָחִיו. אֶלָּא אִישׁ: דָּא שִׁמְעוֹן, כְּתִיב הָכָא אִישׁ, וּכְתִיב הָתָם וְהִנֵּה אִישׁ מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בָּא, מַה לְּהַלָּן מִשִּׁמְעוֹן, אוֹף הָכָא נָמֵי שִׁמְעוֹן. וּבְגִין דְּאַהֲדַר בִּתְשׁוּבָה, בָּכָה וְאִתְנֶחָם עַל דָּא, וַאֲמַר לְלֵוִי, אֲבָל אֲשֵׁמִים אֲנַחְנוּ, עַל דָּא אִתְבְּנֵי מַזָּלֵיהּ שׁוֹר, כְּגַוְונָא דְּמַזְּלֵיהּ דְּיוֹסֵף שׁוֹר, דִּכְתִיב בְּכוֹר שׁוֹרוֹ הָדָר לוֹ, וּמַזָּלֵיהּ דְּשִׁמְעוֹן שׁוֹר אִיהוּ.
