134. "Now the manna was like coriander (Heb. gad) seed" (Bemidbar 11:7). Rabbi Yosi said: "GAD SEED" HAS THE SAME MEANING AS, "RAIDERS (HEB. GEDUD)," NAMELY to establish seed and armies in the land, as it is written: "Gad, shall gather a regiment" (Beresheet 49:19). As the seed of Gad took their portion in another land, MEANING ACROSS THE JORDAN RIVER, the manna similarly descended to rest on Yisrael outside the Holy Land, NAMELY IN THE DESERT.
134. וְהָמָן כִּזְרַע גָּד הוּא. אָמַר רִבִּי יוֹסֵי, לְקַיְּימָא זַרְעָא וְחֵילִין בְּאַרְעָא, כד"א גָּד גְּדוּד יְגוּדֶנּוּ. מַה זַרְעָא דְּגָד נַטְלֵי חוּלָקֵיהוֹן בְּאַרְעָא אַחֲרָא, כַּךְ מָן שַׁרְיָא עָלַיְיהוּ דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, לְבַר מֵאַרְעָא קַדִּישָׁא.
